Globe Theatre

The Globe Theatre was located directly across Suffolk Street from The Suffolk Theatre and was a second and third-run theater for many years. The Globe was opened prior to 1913. It was especially known for westerns and serials. A bowling alley was located directly above the theater which made for an interesting "sound" experience at times.

The Globe Theatre was closed and demolished in the early-1950’s.

There is a MGM Theatre Photograph and Report form for the Globe Theatre at 26 Suffolk St. in Holyoke. It has a photo of the entrance taken in May 1941. There is a rain canopy over the sidewalk but it doesn’t appear to be a real movie marquee. Above, on the 2nd floor are windows in which there are big letters spelling out “Alleys”, undoubtedly for the bowling alley up there. The Report states that the Globe has been a MGM customer for 2 years; that it was built about 1920; that it’s in Poor condition; and has 440 seats, apparently all on one floor.

The District Police Report for the year ending October 31, 1913, lists Charles L. Higginbotham as the operator of the Globe Theatre. A Charles S. Higginbotham was listed as operator of the Suffolk Theatre. One midle initial or the other might have been an error.

The District Police Report for the year ending October 31, 1916, listed the Globe Theatre in Holyoke as being operated by Alexander Cameron. Cameron had also opened the Strand Theatre around the end of the previous year.
