Opened in 1971, the Morehead Plaza Cinema was located on Bridges Street at the rear of Morehead Plaza Shopping Center. Owned by Stewart & Everett Theatres, the Morehead Plaza Cinema expanded to two screens by 1977 and went to three screens by 1980.

Carmike Cinemas acquired this theater and the Morehead Theater 1&2 on Arendell Street in 1986, renaming the Morehead Plaza Cinema the Cinema Triple. After the Morehead Theater 1&2 was closed the Cinema Triple was renamed the Carmike Cinema 3, and it was the last movie theater in Morehead City. The Carmike Cinema 3 was closed by April 2011, leaving Morehead City without a movie theater.

I was stationed at MCAS Cherry Point in Havelock from late 1981 to late 1983 and saw quite a few movies here with buddies or dates. Among those that stand out in my memory most are Fast Times At Ridgemont High, An Officer And A Gentleman, and The Verdict. Great memories of good times with good friends, many of whom I’m still in touch with in 2018.
