So-Cal Cinemas Canyon Crest 5 first appeared in the Independent Theatre Guide of the Los Angeles Times on December 19, 1980. On June 24, 1983 it became the Canyon Crest 9 when a separate building was added for four more screens. After many years without any serious competition, the Riverside Press-Enterprise reported on October 15, 1996 that the theater was going discount. This was due to the impending opening of the UltraStar University 12, only two miles away, which would open in November. Bruce Sanborn of So-Cal Cinemas was not too happy that the UltraStar complex was partially subsidized by the city redevelopment agency and the University of California.

On January 28, 1997 five of the Canyon Crest screens were darkened with four screens remaining open for art films with the new name, Cinematique. In the following years Press-Enterprise stories tell of the Canyon Crest Cinemas opening and closing a few times under different operators. The five-screen complex even housed a church at one time and was used for community events. The last time the four-screen cinema closed was in September of 2004 after a five-year run of art films under an independent operator. The Press-Enterprise said in 2005 that the Tortilla Grille and Crest Cafe were replacing the theaters. The approximate location of the former theaters, if any parts remained after construction, is the building with the clock tower.
