Located in the up-market Thornton Lodge suburb of Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. The Plaza Cinema was opened on 2nd March 1931 with “Rookery Nook”. It was built on the site of a former cinema, which had been a conversion of the Fisher Silk Mills.
The Plaza Cinema had seating in stalls and circle levels, in the the auditorium which runs parallel to the road. The proscenium was 30 feet wide, the stage 15 feet deep, and there were four dressing rooms.
The Plaza Cinema was closed in 1961, and was converted into a church. In recent years, an electrical store has operated from the building and that closed in January 2016. It became a charity shop.

Eldon’s electrical store put the shutters down in January 2016 after 13 years at the address. St Martin’s Catholic Centre was there before that.
Absolutely beautiful interior , and a non descript exterior .The Plaza , has a full stage , and when used as St Brigids church , was fully maintained.A flat ‘dance floor was installed ,, and the insertion of a flat floor mean that stage level is only a couple of feet above this floor..Visited in summer 2020, the place is in wonderful condition , used as a charity shop by a local organisation . With respect it’s wasted on this, but at least it is being cared for
