Located in the district of Outwood, north of Wakefield, West Yorkshire. The Empire Cinema was opened in 1921. It had a 27 feet wide proscenium, which was widened to 35 feet when CinemaScope was introduced. It was always independently operated.
The Empire Cinema was closed in 1964, and was converted into a bingo club in 1967. The bingo club was closed in 1987, and the building became a retail carpet warehouse.
In 2002 it was transformed into the largest fish & chip restaurant that I have ever seen! You can even ‘take-away’ or drive through. The auditorium is decorated with film and theatre memorabilia.
