The Regent Cinema was opened on 28th December 1939. It had a 36 feet wide proscenium. There was a dance hall attached to the building.
It was taken over by the Essoldo Cinemas chain in March 1949, and was re-named Essoldo. The Essoldo was closed on 4th February 1967 with Elvis Presley in “GI Blues” and Jerry Lewis in “The Caddy”.
After laying unused for several years, it was converted into a nightclub in 1972. After the nightclub closed, the auditorium was used as an indoor market for a while, until it was demolished in 1987.
The front of the building was retained, and today is in use as an off licence, video store and newsagents, together with other retail premises which form Regent Parade.

I worked as a part time projectionist at this Essoldo cinema for about 18 months in 1959. The Chief projectionist at that time was Keith Wood.
