Promenade 6

This theatre was originally a large single-screen theatre ABC/Interstate opened in 1965 as the Westwood Theater. The shopping center that contained this theatre was known as the Westwood at the time.

In 1970, a second, smaller auditorium was added, and it was called the Promenade Theater, as the shopping center had been renamed the Promenade Shopping Center. Within a couple of years, the theatre was simply known as the Promenade I and II.

All of the big blockbuster films from the late-1960’s and the 1970’s that had extended runs usually played in the big auditorium. However, in the early-1980’s, the Plitt chain took it over and it became a discount dollar theatre.

In May 1984, the theatre was remodeled for the worse. The big screen was split into four screens, and the smaller auditorium was split into two screen. The remodeling job was poor, and the smaller theatres had an awkward access and were not very clean.

Somehow, the theatre stayed in business until 1994, but the Promenade Shopping Center got a major facelift, and the theatre was demolished. A Kroger grocery store stands at this location.

Note that there is a new Promenade Theater in the same shopping center but north of the movie theatre’s location, which is only used for live theatre.
