There’s not a lot of information that I can find about this theater, but there are actually two theaters that were named the Sakura Theatre. The original Sakura Theater at Building 630 opened in 1954 as a 20,776 square-foot single-screener and operated for 62 years until the original theater’s closure on June 30, 2016, when a newer theater opened. Unfortunately, the original Sakura Theater was immediately demolished after closure in order to expand their Child Development Center.

A newer Sakura Theater opened the next day nearby on July 1, 2016, as a major upgrade to the Command Assembly Hall which was constructed with an estimate $28 million that lasted for more than two years between September 2013 and March 2016 with an additional $1.5 million spent furnishing the facility, featuring a modern stage with a large high-leveled widescreen CinemaScope screen, state-of-the art seating, four ticket windows, guest lockers, an updated and expanded concession stand with five soda fountains, 2D and 3D digital projection, and a surround-sound system. The newer Sakura is located on 1 Chome Misumimachi, Iwakuni, Yamaguchi 740-0025, Japan.

Man, this brought back memories. I was stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni from 1977 to 1978. I remember when the theater showed Star Wars, the line to get in was HUGE. Thank you for posting this theater, it’s one of my many memories of my time in the Marine Corps.
