Located in Lerwick, on the Shetland Islands, north of mainland Scotland. The North Star Cinema was the most northerly cinema in the United Kingdom. It was opened in 1913. Seating was provided in stalls and circle levels and the proscenium was 19 feet wide. The projection box was located in the rear stalls, beneath the circle. It was equipped with a British Thomson-Houston(BTH) sound system.
By September 1968, it was playing films five days a week, with bingo being played on the other two days. It closed as a cinema in 1989, “Batman” was said to be the final film.
The stalls area was levelled and with seating removed, it began use as a nightclub, which continued as the North Star until it was closed in 2007. Cinema seats remain in the former circle, although this area was later not used. The projectors remained in situ in the projection box. The building was demolished in 2012 and housing has been built on the site.

When I worked on Survey ships in the 70’s we would go ashore to this Cinema when we could.. I remember we saw a double bill of The Shining and Carrie.. just as Carrie’s hand came up through the ground suddenly in the final scene the Cinema Cat ran past us under the seat brushing our legs.. we just about had heart attacks..
