Studio Cinema, Bletchley. Circa 1971

Located on Bletchley Road, now renamed Queensway, the Studio Cinema was opened on 5th October 1936 with Gary Cooper in “Mr. Deeds Goes to Town”. All seating was on a single level, and lighting in the auditorium was concealed in troughs. It was independently operated by the Charles Barnett/Fletch Barnett syndicate, it was taken over by the Shipman & King circuit in September 1937.

In 1967, it was taken over by ABC/Thorn EMI. The Studio Cinema was closed on 9th December 1986 with Sigourney Weaver in “Alien”. It was a casualty of the opening of the UK’s first multiplex, the 10-screen Point at nearby Milton Keynes. It was demolished and shops and housing were built on the site.

The Studio was designed by EB Parkinson of Huntingdon, who also designed the Studios in Hassocks and Elstree. The proprietors were Walter Fletcher and Charles Barnett.
