Located across the street from the Plaza del Congreso, in the heart of Buenos Aires. It was opened in 1912 as the Cinematograf de la Plaza del Congresso. Soon after opening it was renamed Cine Gaumont in honor of one of the film pioneers of the country Léon Gaumont. In 1956 it was retrofitted for CinemaScope and again in 1958 for Cinerama.
In 1995, the upper balcony was split in two, giving birth to auditoriums #2 with 300-seats and #3 with 250-seats. The orchestra stalls floor has 600-seats.
Since 2003, it is being rented by the Instituto Nacional de Cine y Artes Audiovisuales. (INCAA) and devoted solely to exhibiting Argentine films. In 2012 it was threatened with demolition and was saved on July 6, 2012 when it was granted Listed Building status.

I have a postcard of the Avda. Corrientes. Buenos Aires showing the Cine Plaza. The name PLAZA (in neon?) is seen across the front of the horizontal canopy and there is a large vertical sign of the name CINE PLAZA. This is seen backwards—I’m assuming the letters of the sign were only seen positively, from one direction.
The English caption on the reverse states: Corrientes Avenue’s lights, street where activity is greatest – Buenos Aires – Argentine Republic. This appears to be a tinted/colored b&w photo.
