The Colonial Theatre opened on April 10, 1912, and was for a few years the only theater in Saranac Lake. The house, owned by J.H. Farrington, presented movies, vaudeville, and the occasional road show of a stage production. The theater and its balcony occupied the two lower floors of a three story building, with the top floor leased to the Odd Fellows Lodge.
With the opening of the larger Pontiac Theatre in 1917, the Colonial’s popularity began to decline. The theater was closed by the late-1920’s, and its space was converted into a grocery store. The lodge hall upstairs was divided into apartments. The building survived until 1974, when it was demolished to make way for a bank.
