Located in the Sydney suburb of Eastwood. The Duke of York Theatre was opened in May 1927. On 14th May 1932, organist Stan Cummins opened the newly installed Australian built Christie 2Manual/7Ranks organ. Other organist’s who appeared on the console include Penn Hughes, Ray Chaffer, Cyrus Tuckwell, and finally Pierre de Clossay. The organ was closed-down in September 1940. It was re-opened on 17th December 1949 by organist John Pitt, and was used regularly for the Odeon National Cinema Club, as the theatre had been taken over in 1950 by Greater Union Theatres and re-named Odeon.
The Christie organ was removed from the building in 1957 and sold to Epping Baptist Church. The Odeon was closed on 11th January 1973, and was demolished. Eastwood Shopping Centre was buuilt on the site.

The cinema of my childhood. I recall that around 1958 the manager was Mr.Priestly who lived close to our residence in Eastwood. For correctly naming the following week’s (Saturday afternoons) features, I received free tickets to see “Rin Tin Tin’s Birthday” – in the late 1950s. Wow!
Googled films but couldn’t find that which I mentioned earlier “Rin Tin Tin’s Birthday”. I’m certain it was a Rin Tin Tin movie though! One cinema I recall with pleasure was located in Byron Bay, now a hugely popular beachside town on the Far North Coast of NSW. It is in fact the most easterly point of Australia. Canvas deck chairs or beach chairs were furnishings in this theatre. This would have been in the mid 1960s. Wonderful atmosphere.
The Odeon Eastwood, at 160 Rowe Street, Eastwood screened its last film on January 11, 1973 and was demolished to make way for the Eastwood Shopping Centre.
