Odeon Gloucester

The Plaza Super Cinema was opened on 25th November 1935 with W.C. Fields in “David Copperfield” and Laurel & Hardy in “Fixer Uppers”. It was independently operated and had seating in stalls and circle levels. The proscenium was 44 feet wide. There was a cafe located in the circle foyer.

On 11th January 1956, it was taken over by Circuits Management Association(CMA) soon to become the Rank Organisation. It was modernised and re-named Odeon from 28th January 1957.

The Odeon was closed on 30th August 1975 with “The 7th Voyage of Sinbad” and “Watch Out We’re Mad”. It was converted into a Top Rank Bingo Club. In recent years it operated as a Mecca Bingo Club which closed in July 2022.

What a nice looking facade… which has some slightly similar features that of Southampton’s (now destroyed) Odeon.
