Opened as early as April 1978.
I saw a lot of movies back in the day at Cinemas West. Several “Friday the 13ths”, “Return of the Jedi”, “A few good men”, “Poltergeist”, “Here come the Tigers” and countless others. They had the video game “Vanguard” in the lobby, and I became somewhat of a guru at it. As I remember the popcorn was especially good here. Sadly, in the 1990’s, the neighborhood around the theatre began to deteriorate. As a result, it got to the point of where you didn’t go to a movie after dark at this theatre. Car break ins and assaults in the parking lot became commonplace. A sad ending to a (at one time) state of the art theatre. Made a lot of memories there going on dates and out with friends. Times were much, much simpler back in the 1980’s.
Yeah I worked at BlueRidge and Cinemas west. It still my favorite Job I ever worked. Man! Closing those theaters was soooooooo sad. I opened Hollywood and stayed until 1999 January 20th. That’s how much I love working their.
Hey jwfletcher, I managed Cinema West in 1996 after I left Blueridge were I managed for 2 years 1995-1996. Jackie was at Cinemas west for at least 3 years before me 1993-1996. A
I grew up in this theater. My dad was the manager from 1981 until 1997, with a brief hiatus during UA’s money issues in about 1989 or 90. I remember seeing countless movies here, playing on the arcade games, and running around being a terror.
It’s a shame they sold and demolished this place.
Couple of interesting tidbits, during the “split” of the big house on the right side, my dad was injured by falling from the roof (1993) and the theater never really ran the same after that. After Dad was forced to leave by management (1997), they converted it to a dollar theater and sold out to Hardman a few years later.
Thanks Arlin,Georgia theatres had a habit of ruining some of our best Theatres in the State.
