The Alma Theatre was opened in November 1952 as a single screen seating 503. Initially it was owned by the May Family who operated the theatre until 1980.

In 1980 Landmark Theatres took over operations of the theatre and converted it to a three screen operation. Seating was listed at 373, #1 208, #2 78 and #3 86. By 1990 the theatre was back under May Theatres, who operated it showing first run attractions. The theater was closed August 18, 2026.

There are some pictures of the Alma on this webpage (scroll down about three-quarters of the way to see them): View link. Theater Style should be Quonset Hut.

The Alma Theatre closed on August 18, 2026, because of mounting financial pressures and severe post-pandemic-related challenges of keeping the attendance alive in a small town of 6,600. However, it remains unknown if the closure is a financial decision or the result of other factors.

“The theatre’s last operation was Aug. 18, with the May family announcing its permanent closure on social media on Aug. 21.

““Running a small business in town these days is pretty challenging,” owner Noel May said when asked whether the closure was a financial decision or the result of other factors. “They are kind of tied together,” he added.

May said the family had been trying to keep the theatre operating despite the challenges facing small-town cinemas."
