Sky-Vue Drive-In

The Sky-Vue Drive-In opened on July 17, 1953 with John Lund in “Woman They Almost Lynched” & “Bugs Bunny’s All-Star Cartoon Revue”. It had a car capacity of 300-cars and was operated by W.A. Collins. It was later operated by Wehrenberg Theatres. The drive-in was still open in 1986 but had closed by the 1990’s.

The drive-in sat on a hill just to the south of where the Lawn Care Equipment Company building resides. You can still see remnants of the ramps and screen foundation. The ticket booth and the concession stand/projection booth appear to still be standing.

A large cell phone tower stands next to the projection booth/concession stand.

There’s a 1985 photo of the Sky Vue, apparently still active, at VintageAerial.com. That site also has a 1990 photo showing the Sky Vue closed but the screen still up.

In a March 27, 1954 article about drive-ins' season opening dates, BoxOffice mentioned that W. A. Collins of De Soto owned the “Skyview”.

Motion Picture Herald, July 5, 1952: “W. A. Collins, of DeSoto, Mo., announced that he had completed plans for the erection of a 400-car open air theatre, to cost $75,000, at the intersections of State Highways 21 and 110. Construction will start as soon as permits and materials can be obtained, he said.”

Still open in 1986, but was gone by the 1990s.
