Helena May of Institute for Women

The Helena May of Institute for Women was an organization for the purpose of promoting the welfare of women and girls in Hong Kong. According to its web-site:it was founded in 1916 and named after Lady May, the wife of Sir Henry May, Governor of Hong Kong at the time. Funded largely through the generosity of Sir Ellis Kadoorie and Mr.Ho Kom Tong, its three storey building with basement opened on 12th September, 1916.

As reported by Chinese language newspapers, the main lounge of the building was converted into a temporary cinema for film shows organized by the British Council in the late-1940’s.
