Gaumont Palace Coventry

Here can be seen the triumph of Percy Bartlett’s design for the Gaumont Palace and most outstanding cinema built by the William Henry Watkins practice. The heavy crimson and gold house curtains feature a pair appliqué golden Griffin bearing flaming torcheres enclosed within the three arched illuminated proscenium. Centre within the spacious front area is the Compton organ console, directly above are the organ chambers concealed by decorative gold grilles. Percy Bartlett next Gaumont Palace was at Plymouth opening 16th November 1931 and his final cinema was the Gaumont Palace Exeter that opened 16th May 1932. Percy Bartlett, after having been designer of the Regent cinema Bristol and the four Gaumont Palaces, then left the Watkins practice to join Boots of Nottingham, eventually becoming their Chief Architect.
