The Avenue Theatre opened in January of 1920 and closed on June 18, 1949 likely at the end of a 30-year lease with a burlesque show paired with the exploitation film, “I Hate Coppers.” The theatre was first turned into a furniture store. It then was used as a warehouse for a office supplies retailer.
Benjamin C. DeCamp of Cincinnati was the architect after the 1917 fire that badly damaged it.
The Avenue Theatre, at the above address, was on a list of Cincinnati movie houses published in the March 29, 1915, issue of The Cincinnatian, the official publication of the Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce. In that year it shared the 100 block of Fifth Street with three other movie houses; the Alhambra, the Colonial, and the Lubin.
This cinema was in an area staffed with many early nickelodeons like the Lubin,Star,Pastime,Pekin, and even an Orpheum Theater which was not in Peebles corner.
