Bolour Associates purchased the property (pre-covid) with plans to repurpose (retail units ground level, apartments and live performance spaces second level). Unfortunately, after gutting the interior, construction appears to have come to a standstill. I haven’t noticed any further activity for quite some time.

I think the Smodcastle has moved out. I’ve driven past the building a few times in the last few years and there is heavy construction happening inside. Thank goodness the exterior doesn’t seem to be in danger but looks like the inside has been completely gutted. I never got a chance to check it out, sadly.

Any insight to this recent construction is appreciated.

As of 2013, this entire block continues to house five independent live theaters (and a rather humorous statement on indie theater life, with a liquor store capping “theater row”). It appears the complex is the result of neighboring retail spaces being converted to theater use.

The theater’s name comes from the SModcast, a weekly podcast by Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier. They replaced the p in podcast with the initials of their surnames and came up with SModcast, and thus SModcastle.
