Liberty Cinema

Originally conceived by British architect M.A. Riddley Abbott in 1947, he was killed in a plane crash in 1948, and the building was completed to the altered plans of architects John Berchmans Fernandes and Waman Moreshwar Namjoshi. The Liberty Cinema is located opposite the Bombay Hospital, and is located in a six storey Art Deco style office and retail building, named the Liberty Building.

The Liberty Cinema was opened on 2nd February 1950, and is an Art Deco style ‘jewel’. Seating is provided in stalls and balcony levels. The auditorium has a stepped ceiling with a series of concealed lighting troughs, that extend down the side-walls. On the splay walls each side of the proscenium are alcoves containing stylised plaster fountains, which are back-lit.

At the top of the building is a 42-seat private cinema (used by the Liberty Cinema’s owner), which is also decorated in a lavish Art Deco style.
