Located in the district of Warrawong, to the southeast of Port Kembla. The Odeon Theatre was opened on 11th December 1948 with Humphrey Bogart in “Action in the North Atlantic”. It was built for and operated by the Greater Union Cinemas chain. Seating for 1,391 was provided in stalls & balcony levels. The rectangular shaped proscenium was surrounded by three troughs containing concealed lighting.
It was closed suddenly by Greater Union in March 1971 with “Paint Your Wagon” and “I Killed Rasputin”.
Eighteen months later on 2nd June 1972, the former balcony was opened as the 518-seat Gala Cinema with “Nicholas and Alexandra” screened in 70mm. The former stalls area was converted into retail use.
In around 1996, a second screen seating 107, was built on the roof of the theatre, where the roof garden was originally sited.
