Closed in 1961.
Opened on 9/7/1948 with “Tarzan and the huntress” and “Code of tne west”. 500 cars.
The 1000 Islands Drive-In Is First Opened In 1948. I Did Check The First Attraction “Panhandle,“ Also Released In 1948.
From the Motion Picture Herald, Oct. 6, 1951: Donald Gilson, operator of drive-ins at Canton and Massena, has acquired the Thousand Island drive-in and the Bay theatre, Alexandria Bay, from Mrs. Antoinette McNamara.
A better address for this theater would be 43341 New York 12, Alexandria Bay NY. This points to the New York State Police Department. The drive in itself was located across from this location. Parts of the entrance and exit roads are still there. Some ramps though barely visible are also still visible. Apparently Hwy 12, when expanded took out part of the theater.
Please update.
DriveInTheater.com says the 1000 Islands was removed to make room for the cloverleaf, and the Historic Aerials 1994 photo shows more distinctly that it was adjacent to the ramp at the northeast corner of that interchange, across the driveway from the current State Police building.
The 1000 Islands was replaced by the Bay Drive-In, which opened in 1968.
Based on information presented in the poster, the drive-in appears to be located to the west of 43546 New York 12, Alexandria Bay, NY.
You can still see the faint outline of the drive-in and the ramps, but nothing else remains. http://tinyurl.com/p3bnk3s
