Metro Interior 1936

Built by Robert Davenport in 1910, it operated as the Davenport Theater and then the Pastime Theater until 1916 when it became the Metro Theater.

From 1919 to 1936 it was operated by owner George W. Johnson under a lease agreement with the municipally-owned Auditorium Theater. When the lease arrangement collapsed the Metro Theater business, but not the building, was sold to Eddie Ruben who remodeled it into a stunning streamline Moderne style with 520 seats.

It was operated by Ruben’s Welworth Theaters until 1951. It has been closed since and is now a retail store.

Open 1935-1950?

Owned 1940-1950 Welworth Theater Company?

Anyone have more info and photos?

Been to Red Wing, missed this theater. It’s a nice town on the Mississippi, home of Red Wing Shoes. Also home of Red Wing Stoneware, that all started back in 1861, we have all sorts of antique Red Wing jugs and crocks in our home here in Illinois. If you take AMTRAKS train number 7 & 8 the EMPIRE BUILDER between Chicago and Seattle Washington/Portland Oregon you stop in Red Wing.

The Davenport Theatre changed hands in 1912, as noted in the September 7 issue of Moving Picture World: “F. E. Daigneau, of Austin, Minn., father of D. Daigneau, closed a deal recently by which he purchased the fine Davenport motion picture theater at Redwing, Minn. Its seating capacity is 600.”
