Please update, theatre open June 11, 2010. No grand opening ad in the Los Angeles Times, press release in photos.
They will be opening their first San Francisco CA Theatre in the closed former AMC 14 Van Ness Theatre. With a opening in 2020 with SF’s first 4D auditorium along with our first EX 3 projector cinema. We look forward to this new CJ CGV movie theatre company coming into the long SF controlled AMC and CineMark/Century theatres that don’t offer any thing new for the locals or tourists to enjoy once inside their cinemas. Good luck on your move up to SF!
On 2/13/11 I was the only person attending an afternoon screening of “The Other Woman.” It’s sound and quality are comparable to ArcLight.
Natalie Portman gave an in depth performance. This is a sadly uoverlooked movie that got a mediocre L A Times review. I gave it four stars.
I’d like to visit this theatre at one point. I’ve been checking to see what Korean films they have booked.
CGV is definitely the theater I go to for all my movies now.
CGV is known for their customer satisfaction and is pretty reputable in Korea, so I decided to give it a try. Truly didn’t disappoint my expectations!
Aesthetically, it’s clean, modern, and welcoming with their beautiful interior. My boyfriend and I decided to watch a movie after our dinner at the Madang Plaza. Surprisingly, CGV offered the major Hollywood films AS WELL AS popular South Korean films. We really liked the fact that you could choose where we wanted to sit, and they even offered “loveseats,” which were premium seats at the way back of the theater. We also joined the CGV Membership Club which was free and offered many perks. The membership offered a 10% discount at their Cine Cafe, so we decided to grab coffee and dessert before the movie. The cafe had a variety of items from home-baked desserts, LAMILL coffee, and even Fosselman’s ice cream.
Inside the theater, our seats were REALLY comfortable and it compared to the experience to that of ArcLight Hollywood—another theater I love.
I definitely recommend this theater to all and it truly is a treasure at the heart of Koreatown.
PS. there’s FREE parking, a rare treat in for us Angelenos!
Currently the only new theater that is truly a treasure is the AMC Atlantic Times Square as this is the last Loews theater ever built. Its opening marks the end of a storied and historic chain.
It could not a treasure like CWalczak stated,Not this Quick.Let’s get some popcorn butter stains on the carpet first.
Perhaps in the first years of this site’s existence, the theaters that were posted tended to to be classic single screen theaters, the treasures of memory. It is rather apparent that over time, the site evolved into a more comprehensive database of theaters. What makes a particular theater or drive-in a “treasure” I think is ultimately very personal and subjective.
A few people objected when adult theaters began to be included, but what is trashy to one person may be a place of fond memory to another. As far as I know, there is no minimum age requirement for a theater to be listed here, and certainly a number of theaters over the the last few years have been added as soon as they have opened. Perhaps given the relatively short life of more than just a few theaters built after, oh, say 1960, it may very well be a good idea to list them before they are totally forgotten.
I do think though, as in the case of this theater, it somehow is not right for a theater’s management to declare it a “treasure”. I think that is for patrons to determine.
Let me know if I am wrong, this theatre just opened and is already a Cinema Treasure?
It’s just my opinion, but I think it is rather self-serving for a theater’s management to write the introductory headnote for a theater. This one reads like more a piece of promotional advertising.
The Chain: CJ CGV
Seats: Total of 580 Seats with 40 premium seats that provide more leg room.
They also have a Cine Cafe located inside the theater, with a variety of drinks from Tea, Coffee, to blended drinks, and desserts and food that can be taken inside the theater to consume while watching a movie.
They play the latest Korean movies with English subtitles as well as the latest American movies. CGV has digital projection and also plays 3-D films.

I saw this on Western the other day. Kind of a surprise to see a new theater across the street from the Wiltern, but of course the latter doesn’t show films any more.
