The Capitol Cinema opened on 3rd October 1929 by an independent operator. It stood on a prominent corner site at North Road and Duke Street (known as ‘Capitol Corner). The corner entrance had a white stone facade, with the abutting walls in red brick.
The Capitol Cinema was taken over by Liverpool-based Regent Enterprises Ltd. in 1929, and by the Associated British Cinemas(ABC) chain in 1935. It underwent a renovation in the 1960’s, and was closed by ABC on 9th December 1978.
The building was converted into a sports centre, by 2009 it was a Central Fitness gymnasium.

Wow, I didn’t think that many.Well, you have plenty of work.I am a big 007 fan and i wish one day to visit Studios there. I dated a girl whose mom was a Brit,Yep,she married a yank. I had a chance to fly over to England with my girlfreinds mom back in the 80’s.All i needed was airfare,she had the room and board with family. I kick myself today for not going.Man I loved her yorkshire puddin'.
