Opened on July 16, 1949 with Robert Young in “Lady Luck”. The Starlite Drive-In in Macon was owned by J.L. Hartman and was the second smallest drive-in in this middle Georgia city, parking 350 cars. It was closed in early-1955.
It reopened on May 11, 1956 as the Family Drive-In with Richard Widmark in “Red Skies of Montana” & Dale Robertson in “Return of the Texan”. It was a short lived venture which soon closed for good.

I remember going to the Starlite Drive-In on Old Columbus Rd., Macon,GA, with my parents back in the early and mid-1950’s. I loved watching the cartoons before the movies came on. Since I was a small child, I would get sleepy. My parents would let me crawl up in the back window of our 1950 Chevy (cream in color) and watch the blinking star on the marquee until I fell asleep. I slept there until we got home…which was about 4 miles west on, what was then called, Thomaston Rd.
This opened on July 16th, 1949, as the Starlight Drive-In. Grand opening ad posted.
Per the opening night advertisement this would be approximately 4006 Mercer University Drive-no Topo or Aerial indication after 1954 but this is right across from the Macon Memorial Park
According to the Macon Telegraph, the Starlite operated from its start in 1949 until early 1955 (or if not December 1954). Closing for a while, the city of Macon originally planned to add another Drive-In for negroes only, but the case was dropped soon after.
However, after closing for nearly a year, the Starlite reopened as the Family Drive-In on May 11, 1956 with “Red Skies Of Montana” and “Return Of The Texan”. This didn’t last pretty long.
