Capitol Cinema

Originally opened as a meeting hall in 1889 known as the Phillips Memorial Temperance Hall, it was converted into a cinema soon after sound pictures came in the 1930’s seating around this time about 1,000. At this time it was owned by Western Theatres and fitted with a British Acoustic (BA) sound system.

At the begining of 1939 the cinema passed into the ownership of Gwent Cinemas Limited, and when CinemaScope came in, it was an early conversion with a 35ft wide screen. A festoon curtain at this time was also fitted in front of the screen.

The Capitol Cinema was a long narrow hall with little decorative effect, it had a small balcony but a large foyer. The main entrance doors being next to the local fire station which was next door. The Capitol Cinema closed on May 16, 1979 with Cameron Mitchell in “The Blood Suckers” & Walter Brandi in “Slaughter of the Vampires”.

It was demolished, a multi-storey car park now stands on the site.
