I have a picture of the booth will try and find it….inside shot.
Newberry Observer, April 8, 1952, reports that the Cloverleaf Drive-In would have its grand opening April 10,1952 showing the movie “The Gal Who Took The West.” Mr S.L. Stallings is listed as the owner/operator and article says capacity is 270 cars.
Now Newberry Supply. Approx. address for this drive-in was 2454 Wilson Road.
That would be great!!
Sorry. Don’t have any photos. But next time I see a member of the West Family (who still own the property) I’ll see if they have any.
Added Togo 1968
Jeff1..do you have any pictures?
I worked at the Cloverleaf Drive-In Theater in 1965 and 1968. It was at the intersection of SC Hwy 121 and US 76 next to Haile’s restaurant. It was on land leased from the West family and was operated by Fulmer Wells and “Dutch” Albrecht, two men who each had his own “inside” movie theater in downtown Newberry. Dutch had the Ritz theater and Fulmer had the Wells theater (but the Wells theater had burned around the late 50’s).
Thanks guys.
219 and Main Street co-exist only to where SC 34 runs into Main Street. It’s only a couple of blocks. The Cloverleaf was out near Haile’s Restaurant, at the intersection of SC 121 and US 76. The Cloverleaf was never on Main Street.
The Cloverleaf Drive-In was located on the US 76 by-pass at SC 121 in Newberry. I saw many a movie there. The US 76 by-pass is also known as Wilson Road. This was about 2 miles from the downtown area. Today the city has expanded all the way out to that intersection along Wilson Road. In the 1950’s and ‘60’s, that was considered out in the country. There was never a drive-in at SC 219 and Wilson Rd.
It was a favorite place of Newberry College students. They would put two people in the car and several in the trunk. After paying admission for the two, they would drive down near the front and let the others out.
Bob. I have checked several ads on the CLoverleaf and for some reason no steet address is on the ads.I guess the locals knew where it was at. I have a Dec 1 1970 movie list AT THE CLOVERLEAF, “WHICH WAY TO THE FRONT” also a color cartoon. I noticed they rarely had second feature. May 18 1971 and “THE SICILIAN CLAN” is playing with “STORY OF A WOMAN” next.
Folks, help me out here, I’m trying to find these addreses from Manteno, Illinois (40 miles south of downtown Chicago).
The address I got, Wilson Road & College Street, I got from the map and photo from
http://www.drive-ins.com/theater/scclov
which I matched up with the present day Google map. I sorta see that the roads made a clover leaf, if that’s what the name came from.
Chuck1231 says hand bills say Main St.(Hwy.219) at Wilson Rd., looking at the present day Google Map Photo, I can guess that this would have been a great site for a drive-in.
A Newberry Drive-In was also in town, perhaps the map and photo I found that are for the Clover Leaf are really for the Newberry??????
If anyone finds out anything let us know.
PLEASE SEPERATE NAME Cloverleaf TO:
Clover Leaf.
BOB, that sounds right,It is a major intersection before going out to 1-26. A couple of years ago the screen was still up with a few white panels left.
Nick, this Drive-in the CLOVER-LEAF is right in town,no rural roads.
Not a big deal, but I think it’s Clover Leaf?
Is the drive-in at Wilson Road & College Street, on the northeast corner?
I think the drive-in opened in 1955, MARLOWE came out in 1969. It would be great if someone could come up with the exact dates the theater was open.
Whats the info Mike?
Mike, Around 12 years ago on our way back from Charlotte we had just passed through Gastonia. We were on a rural country road when I spotted an old drive-in that looked like it had been closed for decades. The booth was still standing and the old rusted-out projectors were still there but the screen was gone. After we left I noticed a small sign off the road that said Clover. I wonder if this was the same drive-in. Are Newberry and Clover near each other?
Not too far off 1-26 Newberry is located the drive-in was at a crossroad with red lights. It was used to park mobile homes last time i went through.
