Starlite Drive-In

Before you hit the mountains heading into Kentucky, La Follette, Tennessee is your last town of any size. Summer vacationers would catch a movie at the Starlite Drive-In. It was one of two drive-in’s in that East Tennessee town and the first to close once Knoxville’s television signals hit that small town. It closed in the late-1950’s.

It seemed the late-1950’s and early-1960’s saw a lot of smaller drive-ins closed. The Starlite Drive-in parked 300 cars, 3 more than the other drive-in in town, the Skyway Drive-In. The Starlite Drive-In was owned by Tim Smith.

Was open from ABOUT 1955-1975?

THE FILM DAILY YEAR BOOK OF MOTION PICTURES, 1967

Drive-In, Tennessee, La Follette, lists the Starlite, so it must have been open around 1967. Does anyone have any better info on dates or it’s address?

I spent quite a bit of time in La Follette growing up.I sure thought it was gone way before 1975.It must have been located off the main drag, because,The SKYWAY Drive-in,in that city was clearly on the road leading to 1-75. I wish i had the time and money to just hit the road and clear up about these Drive-ins I submitted.

The concession stand was removed in 1982, otherwise the theater itself was almost attached, but I am not sure if the screen was standing at that time.
