Orangeburg Drive-In

The Orangeburg Drive-In was rather small with a capacity of 150 cars. It was opened in May 1950. It was owned by Florence Sanford and had pretty good run in this South Carolina city. It ran movies well into the 1970’s when commerical businesses edged toward the rural area. However, it wasn’t the smallest drive-in, that honor in Orangeburg went to the Skyview Drive-In parking only 100 cars.

September 18,1970 a Friday night feature was a pretty good double feature, "Curse of Frankenstein" and "Horror of Dracula". It must have been a double feature package deal because the ad in the newspaper read "Frankenstein spills it..Dracula,drinks it.", both in color. Other than a few good monster movies the Orangeburg Drive-In had a small concession with your regular drive-in food. Pepe’s Pizza? From 1973 until its closing in 1987 it was screening adult movies.

As with the Bon-Air Drive-in, any extra facts on this Drive-in would be helpful.

Now that’s my kind of drive-in double feature! And I thought the Ruskin D/I in Florida was small with only 200 spaces. Mike, did you ever send me a photo of this one?

Can anyone come up with an address or at least the crossroads of this drive-in?

I THINK it was open from ABOUT 1950-1980, if you find out different, let us know.

I heard it had a home in the screen tower, is that true?

There was a drive-in on Neeses Road (SC 4) at the corner of Cimmeron Drive, near the junction with US 301-601. The ramps are still there, but that’s about it. There was another one at 2231 Rowesville Road (US 21) that appears to still have the projection booth and/or concession stand.

This opened in May 1950 at 2217 Rowesville Road and closed in 1987. Adult movies 1973-1987. I was able to confirm the location after I saw the Bon-Air grand opening ad. There was a very short-lived called the Azalea Drive-In opened in 1955 only.
