General Cinema Corp. began the GCC Northdale Court 6 on May 24, 1985. It closed the venue in October of 1991. Cobb Theatres took on the location as the Northdale Court in December of 1991. Cobb sold off its portfolio officially on June 11, 1997 and the venue resumed changing its name to the Regal Northdale Court 6. Regal closed on June 13, 1999 as an arthouse. It was said to be converted to a fitness center.
This opened on May 24th, 1985. Grand opening ad in the photo section.
Northdale was up in Carrollwood and I rarely went there, but when I did I liked it. Seemed like a big, spacious theater with a nice lobby. Films I remember seeing there:
Pocahantas (1995) Batman Forever (1995) Lone Star (1996) A Price Above Rubies (1998)
Screen 5 at Northdale Court was THX-certified.

I just saw your post from May. I rememebr the opening of the Hillsboro 8 in 1987. It was the most elegant theater in Tampa. They did play 2010 in 70mm and also The Mission and The Dresser on opening week for $1.00. The theater was elegant with purple drapes on the sides of the walls and over the screens of all 8 theaters. The curtains were one that rose up rather than side to side.

Mike, You’re right. I saw 2010 here in 70mm but I can’t recall now if this film was one of the opening attractions at this theatre although it may have been. I’ll check on it during research. Yes I remember two of the larger auditoriums had curtains over the screens but what was unusual was the curtain did not part in the center but instead opened from one side to the other (either left-to-right or right-to-left.) I only saw that once before in a theatre in Virginia…very unusual looking.
Come to think of it…2010 was in fact one of the opening attractions that played in 70mm at Cineplex Odeon’s Hillsboro Eight in 1987. Do you remember this theatre?

The theater opene in 1984. One of the opening attractions was 2010 shown in the large theater in 70MM. The large theater and the one to it’s right had masking and curtains which was not common for GCC. The other 4 theaters had masking that came down instead of across. In the middle 80’s it was a very popular theater for GCC.
This theatre is also on my research list. Hopefully I can find an article published during the grand opening that describes the theatre with more detais. I believe I only saw 3 or 4 movies here since it was miles away from my neck-of-the-woods.
It either became a sports equipment outlet or something of that nature as best as I can recall. Haven’t been in that area in awhile so it might be something else entirely now. The theatre was located in the Northdale Court Shopping Center (on the extreme right-end of the center.) The first time I saw the exterior of the building after it had been rennovated I thought I was at the wrong shopping center. It was completely redone making it impossible to tell it was once a theatre.
I do know it closed sometime around 2002 or 2003.

Boy, Nick what a let down. “2010” I never should watched. It did play at NATIONAL HILLS on the same screen of 2001.But I don’t think it was in 70mm.
One cinema had 70mm capability. I remember seeing “2010” here in 70mm.
