Greater Union Pitt Centre

Located in Sydney city centre, around the corner from the State Theatre. The Greater Union Pitt Centre was opened on 9th April 1976. It stood on the site of the Liberty Theatre.

The Pitt Centre was one of the early multi-screen cinemas being developed at that time. Its three screens had seating for 639, 350 and 448. The 350-seat auditorium was on the ground floor, with the other two screens on the the first floor.

The Greater Union Pitt Centre closed on 5th May 1999, and was converted into retail use, with a furniture store in one of the spaces. In around 2009, the premises were vacated, and the empty building was demolished in May 2010. A 44-storey office tower will be built on the site.

Two photographs I took in March 2010, just prior to preparation for demolition:

A sad loss indeed! I must’ve worn a rut in the pavement between here and the cinemas just around the corner in George Street as a kid.

A shame it isn’t there anymore, unfortunately never went to see anything here, but do remember visiting the foyer one day as a child

The first movie I ever saw here was a double bill of the Marx Brothers – A Day at the Races and A Night at the Opera in July 1976. It was for my birthday. This became my favourite city cinema as it was comfortable, three good-sized screens and a range of movies. Among the movies that screened here (that I recall) were Bugsy Malone, Saturday Night Fever, All Night Long, Ordinary People, Victor / Victoria, The Elephant Man, Black Rain, The Jerk and The Breakfast Club. Great days.

A very sad day when the Pitt Centre closed. I happened to be on holidays May 5th 1999, it’s last day. It’s very faded but I still have the ticket stub from the movie Hilary and Jackie that I saw on that last day. I still think about The Pitt Centre and remember some wonderful times there.
