Located in the seaside town of Filey, North Yorkshire. Opened in February 1911 as a cine-variety theatre - equipped with a small stage - no flytower.
Seating was divided between stalls and single balcony and at some point the proscenium area was redesigned to allow CinemaScope.
It survived reletively successfully, seldom changing hands or closing, until 1995. It seems that major upgrading work to heating, toilets and disabled access were deemed not financially viable and the Grand Theatre closed and was converted into a social club.
The interior was ruthlessly and wantonly stripped out and replaced with a flat floored function room on the ground level with the blandest and dullest of designs. The former balcony was extended and turned into a bar.
The function room folded within months and is now used as a preparation area for vegetables! What a waste.
The Buccaneer Bar continues upstairs.

I visited this cinema regularly during the 90’s. Each alternate row of seating in the stalls had been removed reducing the seating capacity but creating more legroom. The stalls also had reverse rake seating. Was this the last cinema to operate in the UK with reverse rake seating.
It’s continuing successfully as the Bucaneer pub upstairs with the stalls area being used by Smarts Wholesale fruit and veg. traders. I went to one of the last performances – “reverse” rake seating I assume is where the seating seems to go down then goes up? Well we’ve got that at the new Forum Cinema in Bridlington in No.1 auditorium – the nearest neighbour to the old Grand cinema in Filey.
