Once operated by ABC Southeastern Theatres, and finally Plitt Theatres before closing on July 5, 1979 with “Every Which Way But Loose”. The reason of closure is because of the opening of the nearby Deerfield Cinemas, which opened a few weeks later.
This reopened on June 3rd, 1972, with “The Godfather”. Grand opening ad posted.
The November 15, 1947, issue of Motion Picture Herald said that the Gloria Theatre was being enlarged:
This web page has a photo of the Gloria Theatre, and also says that the house was listed in city directories as the Gloria Theatre from 1959 to 1972, but was listed as the Fox Theatre in 1974-1978.The address for this theater was 210 9th ave N. The building at that address now looks like it is a remodeled version of the old Gloria shell. It appears the old ticket window and side entrance to the balcony for blacks is intact on the left front corner.
I was born in Myrtle Beach and watched many movies at the Gloria Theater. I love seeing it again.
From the late 1950s a photo postcard view of Gloria Theatre in Myrtle Beach.
Times have sure changed in the last 50 years, I remember the Loews and Paramount in Nashville having “Colored Balconys” back in the day.
Please note the discriminatory message on the bottom of both playbills that were added above by Don Lewis. This playbill was from 1959.
From 1959 a movie calendar for the Gloria Theatre in Myrtle Beach.
Was this one of the TWO ABC THEATRES we had in that Ocean town?
