Rialto Cinema Maidenhead

ARCHITECT ROBERT CROMIE F.R.I.B.A. 1887 – 1971 The Rialto cinema was designed by the celebrated Cinema & Theatre Architect Robert Cromie for Maidenhead Picture Theatres Ltd., being the first cinema he designed for his own new practice at 35 Baker Street, London. His previous two cinemas Hippodrome Rochdale and Bio Colour Picture Theatre Dalston in London were a collaboration with another architect. The Rialto was constructed by W. Creed & Co. Ltd., of Maidstone and had a rather plain interior, however, this was to change dramatically a year later when Cromie’s massive Davis Theatre with its opulent interior opened in Croydon a year later on 18th December 1928. Robert Cromie’s architectural practice grew by leaps and bounds during the cinema’s golden years 1930 to 1939. By 1936 he was employing forty eight draughtsmen. During 1932 the following cinemas were built these large and impressive Art Deco cinemas opened: Regal Kingston 15th February, Gaumont Palace Hammersmith 28th March and Plaza Southampton 11th October. Cromie completed and opened over sixty Theatre’s and Cinema’s within nine years……….
