The last picture show, Rialto projection room being demolished during August 1985 portholes now looking out onto bright sunshine after sixty years the cinema hub of film entertainment brought direct from the eye of the camera. The silent era into the 1930’s golden years of Garbo talks, Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers dancing their way through opulent Art Deco sets, Joan Crawford, Clark Gable & Vivian Leigh in ‘Gone with the Wind’, Robert Taylor, Judy Garland stepping through ‘The Wizard of Oz’ they all visited this spot. Thousands packed the Rialto during the War years, the decline of 1950’s halted for a short while, then in 1959 ‘Ben Hur’ revisited the Rialto for the second time with dramatic use of sound. The swinging 1960’s still produced some queuing with David Lean’s ‘Doctor Zhivago’ and Sergio Leone’s ‘Dollar’ trilogy, with Clint Eastwood and haunting music sound tracks and of course James Bond. 1970 also saw the demise of MGM, half of its entire workforce were dismissed, followed by huge auctions of props, costumes and furniture…………………………….THE END
