The Joy Theatre at Mount Carmel had an arched front with center box office typical of the small town theatres of its era. It was opened June 5, 1915. It was taken over in 1916 by Theodore Coleman, an enterprising fourteen-year-old, who went on to have a long career as an exhibitor at Mount Carmel. The Joy Theatre was closed on July 30, 1920 with Enid Bennett in “What Every Woman Learns”.
Coleman opened the American Theatre two days later and later still the Uptown Theatre. His son, Keith Coleman, eventually took over both houses and built the Carmel Drive-In as well.

The Joy Theatre was opened on June 5, 1915. In 1916, Theodore Coleman took over the the Joy Theatre. The silent era theatre ended after five years of operation closing with the film, “What Every Woman Learns” on July 30, 1920. Coleman launched the American Theatre two days later in 1920 which effectively ended the Joy.
