My late uncle Jim Carter was the chief there in the late 50s early 60s and the owner he said was called mossy Harris and he had a assistant called ratcliffe , he had fond memories of being chief as the original chief got sacked for throwing a film off the balcony in anger
By 1966 a CinemaScope screen had been installed, RCA Sound and a proscenium width of 25 feet quoted. Seating was for 995 patrons.
I often went to this cinema in the late 50’s/early 60’s. It was known locally as the “flea-pit”, which I thought unfair, perhaps because the nearby Gaumont was more luxuriously appointed.
I just found out today that my Grandfather designed this building. Pity it’s no longer there. I’d love to see it.
