When you get down south you tend to see a lot of Sweetwaters. Don’t know where it came from but you do read a lot about Sweetwater.
So naturally, Barnwell, S.C. had a Sweetwater Drive-In. Like the other two drive-ins in this town, it served a population of workers at the Savannah River Bomb Plant.
The Sweetwater Drive-In parked 250 cars and was owned by Mrs. J.F. Dobson. Barnwell was a town of three drive-ins and all three were owned by ladies. I don’t know if they were local but just the same they took pride in the business that was mainly a male occupation.
The Sweetwater Drive-In was still in operation in the late-1950’s, but I’m sure once television took over it quickly went dark like so many drive-ins in this area.

TLSLOEWS,I wanted to do so much more on the Barnwell Drive-ins,but it is about an hour away from here.Need to get to the local paper for better reserch.I am amazed how some of these CT folks can come up with so much. Nick,spends hours on his Tampa theatres and it shows.
