Located in the basement of the Radisson Edwardian 5* May Fair Hotel, in central London’s swanky Mayfair district. The room was used as the Starlight Cinema Club in the mid-1960’s and into the late-1970’s. It was ‘the’ place to see ‘Classic’ Hollywood feature films, usually double features, which changed programme every evening. Films were screened in 35mm and 16mm prints. There was normally an interval between films, when cocktails and snacks were served. Gradually attendances dropped due to the films being screened could easily be purchased on video tape, and watched at home.
It was taken over by David and Barbara Stone of the Cinegate chain, and ropened as the Gate Mayfair on 14th August 1980 with "The Consequence" a West German film. The Gate Mayfair then tended to be a move-over art house cinema from the Gate Cinema at Notting Hill or Gate Bloomsbury at Russell Square.
The Gate Mayfair was closed on 30th April 1984 with Burt Lancaster in "The Leopard".
The space is now used as the ‘Screening Room’ by the May Fair Hotel for special events hire. It has been re-furbished, and is equipped with 35mm and digital projection, 3D equipment and THX sound.
