Built in 1925 as the Everybody’s Theatre, it was later renamed Regent Theatreandwas independently operated. It became a two screen cinema in 1984, when a 99 seat theatrette was built in the old council offices on the 2nd floor. The main theatre originally held 585-seats and when the foyer was enlarged the seating was reduced to 400.
The main theatre stopped operating as a cinema in 1992 when the screen was damaged during a live performace that was being held on the stage. It re-opened in 2009, the theatrette has operated non-stop since 1984.
Closed by earthquake damage on 3rd September 2010, it was repaired and reopened, but closed again in November 2011, awaiting seismic studies. It reopened as the Town Hall Cinemas in 2015 as a 3-screen cinema.

The Regent reopened mid 2011 after repairs were completed after the 2010/2011 earthquakes. Now the Waimakariri District Council, owner of the Building, has again closed the cinema without warning on November 16 2011 indefinitely and awaiting a seismic report.
Reopened in 2015, as the “Town Hall Cinema”, with a third screen. In 2023 they upgraded cinema three, to have luxury seating.
