Located in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne. The Hoyts Wantirna Drive-In was one of the last of Hoyts drive-in theatres to open. It opened on 22nd August 1968 with Rex Harrison in "Doctor Dolittle". It had a capacity for 658 cars and was initially a single screen theatre.
Designed by Peter Muller of the architectural firm Peter Muller, a notable feature was the projection box located on top of the concession building. The Hoyts Wantirna Drive-In was very successful and a second screen was added in mid-1983 which had its own seperate projection box. There was additional space for the cars, making a 906 car capacity.
The Hoyts Wantirna Drive-In was closed on 26th September 1984, and became a swap meet, which still operates from the site today.
