I-45 Drive-In

Houston’s last original drive-in theater, the I-45 Drive-In opened on July 2, 1982. The 46-acre site had 6 screens and was operated by McLendon Theatres.

The I-45 closed on Leap Year Day, February 29, 1992 with Walt Disney’s animated feature “Beauty and the Beast”. A land development group had purchased the site for retail construction.

I saw this sign for the 45 Drive in painted over and was used for the short lived Lone Star Amphitheater on Westpark @ W Loop 610

Correction that second photo is not from 1984 but 1985. I went here in the fall of 1987 with my family when I was 11 to see a double feature of THE LOST BOYS and WITCHES OF EASTWICK. The sound was off an AM radio station. But it was fun!

Uploaded Goggle Earth 1989. With all the land out there, they had to build right there the drive-in was at. Maybe the business was not very good.

This was five minutes from where I lived as a kid. Of course,it opened just over four years after we left. Our old go to drive-in,the Airline, was fifteen minutes away going down the I-45 Freeway towards the downtown area.
