Actually destroyed by Hurricane Alicia in 1983 and left abandoned. That Gone With The Wind was spray painted there because of Alicia
This closed in the mid-1980s, and was left abandoned until sometime in the late 1990s.
i ran wild in this field before the gulf-way was erected. first movie i remember seeing here was “toby tyler”. my brother and i took coming attractions circulars door to door there in genoa for small change and dog attacks. that crap didn’t last long, lemme tell ya. i well remember the tragic death mentioned by langwhat. kidstuff that will trail you for life.
This was the best drive in anywhere when I was a teenager. They had a great concession stand too! Favorite was called a dipsey doodle, it was just a large fried fish stick in a hot dog bun with ketchup. We thought it was such a great treat! I went to school with the son of the owner. Unfortunately, the owner was killed by some kids who snuck extra, no paying kids in the trunk. They ran over him trying to get away with not paying. So sad. It broke my heart, killing someone over a few dollars.
I remeber working at this theater in the 70’s and 80’s. Good times.
Aerial from 1977.
Any photos?
I remember this drive in, my parents saw “10” with Dudley Moore and Bo Derek while me and my sisters were ducked behind the front seat, so we wouldnt see anything inappropriate. Another time before we saw a Rocky/RockyII double feature.
