Beck Theatre

The Beck Theatre was opened in 1977. It was built by the London Borough of Hillingdon, and was designed by architects J.P. Barber and V.C. James. On 1st April 1992 it was taken over by the Apollo Leisure Group. It is a national touring house and provides the Borough and its neighbouring area with live theatre and occassional film shows.

The building was intended to have multi-purpose uses and is fully equipped for cinema use, having a full size cinema screen, and one Westrex 700 series 35mm projector. The proscenium opening has red house tabs and is 14 metres wide. The stage, which has no rake, is made of sprung Canadan maple wood. There are 8 dressing rooms and the orchestra pit can hold 20 musicians. There is an area of the foyer which can be converted into a 150 seat performances space. The theatre contains a bistro restaurant.

In 1991, a plan by Robins Cinemas chain to convert the building into a 3-screen cinema with a total capacity of 434 was turned down. Also refused was a proposal by Apollo Leisure in 1992, to build an extension that would have included a 300 seat cinema, restaurant and conference centre.

Since then Apollo Leisure have departed from the building and it is now operated by HQ Theatres.
