Opened as a United Artists theatre. It was the first theatre in the area to feature Kodak’s now defunct CDS (Cinema Digital Sound) 5.1 sound system in screen 10.
In September 2009, a Sony 4K 3D system debuted on the theatre’s third largest screen - auditorium 8. It was closed December 15, 2016.

There was an article recently where the new metro line might end up going right through this theatre forcing it to close. If they were sticking around it would be nice to see some kind of renovation.
JodarMovieFan…. Can you offer a clarification, please? In a 2009 comment, you recalled seeing a CDS presentation of “Terminator 2” here and mentioned that it “did not better the 70mm THX engagement.” Were you referring to “70mm THX” presentations in general, or were you referring to a “70mm THX” presentation of “T2” at another Washington, DC area theater?
nextinline – in regards to your comment about the new metro line – the plans are for the entire complex/building to be raised and:
“Austen Holderness, managing director of development for Carr, said the Regal Cinemas currently in the Apex Building would be given the opportunity to return to the new building once it’s finished. Carr is planning to provide space for new movie theaters on the same underground level as the Purple Line station but further south on the property.”

Hi Coate. I don’t think I saw this movie more than twice in theaters. The 70mm THX viewing had to have been at either the Wisconsin 6 or one of the Multiplex Cinemas in Virginia. I’m thinking it was more of the Wisconsin 6 because it was closer to my friend’s home. Whenever we went to these event movies we always chose the best presentation, plus I had the newer reliable car. :) That being said I couldn’t compare it to the non-THX 70mm engagements. I wouldn’t have settled for less than the best with my moviegoing dollar.
I’m also thinking they debuted the exploding/morphing THX trailer based on the scene I mentioned above. Or, was that for the video?

Wow. The venue had a good 25 year run. In my mind it seems like it opened more recently than that.
who knows maybe the new building will have Regal coming back if the managing director for Carr is correct in that Regal have dibs for space within the new complex.

The photos are amazing- you have cut-away view of the entire theater section of the building. Projection rooms, speakers, etc. are visible.
Residents are hoping for a new multiplex in our downtown.
Downtown Bethesda really DOES need a multiplex because Landmark Bethesda is filling in the gap by adding Hollywood mainstream movies and ignoring foreign/indie movies they normally present.
