Previous Names: Hotell Schweitz Biograf-Teater, Grand Cinema
The town of Hoganas is best known for its ceramics. The Hotell Schweitz Biograf-Teater opened on 14th January 1911 with 425 seats. It was built as a live burlesque comedy theatre in 1883, as a seperate annex to the Hotell Schweitz, which had opened in 1830’s.
It was renovated and under new operators became the Grand Cinema in 1941. The current entrance, with the neon sign ‘BIO’ on the canopy was added in 1947. In 1965, it was re-named Saga Cinema. The old hotel was demolished in 1970, but the cinema was retained.
The Saga Cinema is owned by the Hoganas Municipality, and in 2001 there were plans to restore the interior of the cinema.
