The Rex Theater opened on November 9, 1920 with Pat O'Malley in “Go and Get It”. Located on Court Street originally as a venue for movies, vaudeville and legitimate theater. In the 1980’s, the theater’s balcony was converted into a second auditorium.
After falling into disrepair over the decades, the Rex Theater was purchased by Clay Center resident Jeff Young in 1996 and has been undergoing renovation since then, including a restoration of the marquee and façade, modern sound and projection equipment, a rebuilt concession stand, and a new roof.
The Rex Theater screened movies on the weekends, and is also home to the Clay Center Community Chamber Orchestra. It also hosts other live performances when not showing movies. Movies ceased in 2013. Renovations began in February 2018 and it reopened in July 2018.

The Rex Theatre is still open and showing some first run movies. Last week they showed Karate Kid and Grown Ups. The new owners are a local family who has volunteered at the Rex for years. They have made major improvements to the facility and they are open on weekends (with occasional special showings on days when kids are out of school or holiday weekends). Stop by the Rex where movies are always a low $5 per person! We are very fortunate to have the Rex in Clay Center (population 4500) since 1920!
Is this theatre in trouble, the websites are now empty and showtimes for this theatre is nowhere to be found on the internet. Is this a live theatre open only on a part-time basis?
April 15,2009 gerald hogan bought the rex theatre him and his family run it. they have first run movie’s they opened today with paranormal activity 4 10/19/2012 there is contact number 785-447-1540 and email address . They do live entertainment, halloween haunted house, koral dance studio performs here. there is no rodent problem.. its a great family environment & clean. And they have also opened up a coffee house during the day. Its a great family who has it and they take very good care of it I would give it *****. just a great family and they try real hard and work real hard for nothing
the theatre actually seats 300 people
Seems to be doing live performances on an part-time basis. No Movies.
UPDATE 2018 The Rex Theater in Clay Center, Kansas is undergoing a MAJOR renovation, funded by three local investors. A new roof, new paint, repair of the art deco plaster, new handicapped accessible restrooms, complete removal of all debris that was ever stuffed in any hole throughout the entire building, brand new wider seats both on the main level and in the balcony, digital sound, digital movie equipment, a brand new screen with a system that will raise and lower it, even the area beneath the stage intended to be a dressing room will now be used for such once again! One more thing, the theater with its new larger seats will be able to see it less than 300 people
